Can someone explain what a "Plate Tectonic" is?

A tectonic plate is these things under the earths crust and the move around all the time if they hit each other (this mainly occurs around the pacific ring of fire) they cause an earth quake. like take new zealand for example it has a plate border line and because of that border line if the plates hit eachother there are earthquakes that is why it is called a fault line
