How a mountain forms?

helllo? i have a question about the tectonic plate movement and how they make a mountain to form? I visited this place called "Palos Verdes" in California...and I learned that this place has been actually lifted up every your because of the plate movement...But I don't fully understand why? Can u guys explain me with simple english...thank you...
